Weekly Nutcrackers: How to be a Couponista

I came across this step-to-step guide on how to Extreme Coupon yesterday and I thought I should share! Here are some important steps that I think are needed to be a couponista.

Step 1: Decide whether extreme couponing fits your lifestyle.
Are you willing to buy store-brand items instead of name-brand items? Do you occasionally allocate time in your life to seek out deals? Do you find joy in clipping coupons? Are you organized?

Step 2: Understanding deals
Are you a fine-print reader? When you're dining in restaurants, do you usually ask for their specials? Do you know the store's policy of most of your favorite stores? Do you know which days are better to buy certain deals? And the reasons why?

Step 3: Get the inside scoop
Duh, by checking out Nutty Deals daily! :)

I like to hunt for bargains (who doesn't?), but I don't think I'm an extreme couponista since I don't revolve making my purchases around coupons. But who knows, this detailed wikihow article might be helpful to those of you who are ready to take on the challenge!

Deal or no deal?

One of my best girlfriends love priceline. She comes and visit me about once a year and she would always check priceline to book her hotels, car rentals, and sometimes even her flights! Priceline gives you the best and lowest price, BUT what sets them apart is that you can make bids and name your own price for even cheaper. And what Asian doesn't love to bargain?? I personally enjoy bargaining for my purchases. I learned the art of bargaining from my Asian mother (of course) and have practiced it quiet a bit on my frequent travels to Asia. I've experienced calculators being thrown at me, store owners yelling and kicking me out of their stores, and all sort of things for being a crazy bargainer. But at the end of the day, when you get the price you want for the item you want...pure happiness.

If you are a true bargainer and like to name your own price for the items you purchase, you would totally dig this: Gap, the clothing store, is now allowing their customers to make deals with them! I played around with it the other day and almost secured a $5 for a $30 scarf deal!! Unfortunately I didn't like it that much (yes, even for $5) to accept this deal. I mean, why spend money, even if it is cheap, on something you don't really like? I like bargains and deals and all but I don't like to waste money. So, play around with it! Start low and work your way up. Gap will ask you if you can bid higher but if you don't think it's worth that much, then of course don't make the deal. There are only 15 items being dealed at a time so be sure to check often. Who knows one of the items might be something you really like!! Have fun!!

I used to be such a fan of all these rappers like Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhyme, Puff Daddy, Notorious BIG, Dr. Dre, and Eminem (still a fan) when I was younger. I had $10 groupon bucks so I got this deal for $20!! Score!

I'm pretty simple when it comes to fashion accessories. Just my watch and stud earrings, *maybe* a ring or bracelet depending on my mood. But as we get older, we need to accessorize more! I love shiny things (who doesn't) and things that are versatile so I can wear over and over again. So the accessories that I'll be getting will be something like this, this, or this. But there are tons of other accessories to choose from and they have different collection for any occasion (bridal, red carpet, hippie, casual, etc). Groupawn and GrouponLive

So I first heard about this from one of my friends. It's SO COOL. I don't think think I could do it though- live for one year off of Groupons alone. To earn or spend no money, forgo family and friends and not self-destruct or starve??? It's crazy! But this Groupawn (get it?) Josh Stevens did it for a year as part of a $100,000 challenge. It seems fun to have this sort of experience (I follow his blog) but I'm sure there are times where he must have felt lonely or even homesick.

Groupon is crazy man. They turned down a $6 billion offer from Google and have expanded like no other! Even overseas now! I have a friend in Indonesia who started a groupon-like website and his site got bought out by Groupon. I don't blame them for wanting to own all the deal sites and now my friend is a rich man! Groupon is just going to get bigger! Which is a good thing because I am such a groupon addict! They did a groupon reward system sometime ago and invited me to check it out. It was pretty cool to be one of the selected few to test out what is now called the groupon bucks! Not a day goes by without a story about Groupon in the news. They have even recently joined forces with Live Nation to offer discounted concert tickets services. GrouponLive is expected to launch in June!! I'm looking forward to that!

The goal now is to work for Groupon.

XS Project

Happy Friday y'all!

Have any of you ever been to a third world country? What do you usually think of when you hear "third world country"? What pops in my head when I hear those words is dirty and poor. I'm so fortunate to live in America and to have the kind of lifestyle that I do (with or without deals) and sometimes I get so distracted by all the stuff around me that I rarely take the time out to think of those who are less fortunate. I would like to share with you a project that I'm currently involved in: XS Project. There is a large community in third world countries who would earn a living by collecting and reselling trash to support themselves and their families! Isn't that so sad? To make a living by going through people's trash? Well, XS uses art to create new uses for waste to not only reduce the amount of garbage burned or buried in landfills but also to create jobs and stimulate the local economy to combat poverty!

I remember making these art projects when I was in high school. We would collect candy wrappers and make purses or dresses out of it. It was so neat and fun (but took hella days to make!) and now to see it become something marketable while helping out those in need is just incredible. It's amazing what you can do with your talents and where you can take your passions to.

We depend on donations to make sure we can provide scholarships to children of trashpicker families and jobs to the trashpicker communities each month.
